Activewear Fabric Procurement Guide: Core Differences Between Single Jersey and Double Knit & Selection Strategy

1. Core Differences Revealed: Analyzing Single vs. Double Knit from Weave Structure and Yarn Material

In the initial development stages of activewear, choosing between single jersey and double knit directly determines the garment’s texture, functional direction, and wearing experience. These two have essential differences in weaving processes and physical properties:

Single Jersey (Lightweight & Moisture-Wicking): Knitted on a single needle bed, the front and back textures are different (the face shows V-shaped stitches, while the back shows semicircular loops). Its greatest physical advantage lies in its relatively lightweight structure, enabling rapid heat dissipation, moisture wicking, and a “second-skin” fit.

Double Knit (Crisp & High Support): Knitted on a double needle bed (interlock/double circular knitting machine), the front and back textures are completely identical. This interlock structure not only gives the fabric excellent dimensional stability (preventing natural edge curling during cutting) but also provides stronger four-way stretch, recovery, and muscle compression.

2. Sports Scenario Matching: Choosing the Right Fabric Structure for Various Activewear

Structures are not inherently superior or inferior; there is only precise matching based on sports intensity:

Scenarios for Single Jersey: High-sweat running tees, lightweight sun protection clothing, casual activewear cover-ups, and bodysuits/base layers. In these scenarios, the core demands of the human body are rapid heat dissipation and a weightless feel; therefore, the low weight and high breathability of single jersey make it the ideal choice.

Scenarios for Double Knit: Premium yoga pants, tight sports bras, high-intensity CrossFit apparel, and shaping cycling shorts. These types of clothing need to withstand high-intensity stretching and provide essential muscle support for the chest or legs. The high elastic recovery and substantial feel of double knit are irreplaceable here.

4. Procurement FAQ: Demystifying Core Selection for Single and Double Knit Fabrics

Q: A client wants to develop dark-colored yoga pants. Seeing that a single jersey (like Item 2334) also has great stretch, can we switch to single jersey for yoga pants to save costs?

A: Strongly not recommended. Although Item 2334 (190 GSM) has excellent four-way stretch and is very suitable for sports tees or casual tops, the physical structure of single jersey cannot provide the high-intensity muscle compression and lateral support required for yoga pants. For yoga pants, it is still recommended to prioritize double-knit structures like Item 2248 or 2096. During deep stretches (like squats), the loop gaps in single jersey easily widen, which not only causes a see-through (sheer) risk but also makes the fabric prone to bagging at the knees and buttocks after multiple wears.

Q: With ultra-thin single jerseys like Item 3820 (85 GSM), is the fabric prone to edge curling during garment cutting? How does Anruda solve bulk production waste issues?

A: Single jersey edge curling is a natural physical phenomenon caused by the fabric’s internal stress; theoretically, the thinner the single jersey, the more susceptible it is. To solve this pain point, during the dyeing and finishing stage of single jerseys like Item 3820 and Item 2334, Anruda utilizes strict heat setting, pre-shrinking, and open-width finishing processes to release fiber stress to the greatest extent. This ensures the bulk fabric remains flat and crisp when delivered to the garment factory for cutting, fundamentally reducing cutting difficulty and edge waste from the source.

Q: We are developing high-intensity sports bras for summer. If we choose double knits like Item 2248 or 2096, will it be too stuffy to wear?

A: Not at all. Whether a fabric is stuffy depends on scientific weight ratios and moisture-wicking capabilities. Item 2248 (215 GSM) and 2096 (210 GSM) utilize the golden weight standard for yoga apparel, and Item 2096 inherently comes with excellent moisture-wicking effects. Their interlocking double-knit structure provides the necessary shock absorption and anti-sagging support for sports bras, perfectly balancing breathability and functionality—something that summer single jersey simply cannot replace.
